Light The Way Back

by Rachel Luann Strayer

Directed by Alice Jackins

The year is 2082. A plague and a war have wiped out a significant amount of the population. The government has strict rules, yet two young people sneak away from this dystopian world and break into an abandoned theatre. Cam and Jamie the perfect example of opposites. Cam longs for adventure and exploration. Jamie likes to follow the rules. Yet, they make each other better. Jamie shares her wealth of knowledge with Cam, while Cam encourages Jamie to take risks. At first, the theater seems dark and scary, but the two of them encounter historical artifacts like hand sanitizer, an iPhone, and an old script that help them discover the magic of theatre and the importance of honoring their ancestor’s legacies. Another thing they find is a ghost light, a symbol of the lives lost and of hope for the future. After 50 years untouched, the light still turns on to light the way for both the ghosts and the next generation of theatre-makers. A curfew siren sounds. Jamie goes to turn the light off as they leave, but with a newfound appreciation of history and hope for the future, Cam encourages Jamie to leave it on. They hope the light will never burn out and that theatre will last forever.
